ICYMI: March Reflections and a Preview of April

March was an active month in our group as we welcomed 7 new members. In case you missed our discussions, here's a quick overview:

We announced the development of a new LINCS course for corrections educators. The Dos and Don'ts About Educating Adults in a Correctional Setting. While this course will be made available in Spring 2019, let's share some ideas for our new members and educators.

  • Why do you want to be a correctional education instructor?
  • What changes do you think you will need to make to your instructional approach to be successful in a correctional environment?
  • What remaining concerns do you have about working in a correctional setting?

We discussed two COABE presentations on the PIAAC Study

Presenters Katie Landeros and Margaret Patterson shared some highlights of their research and the discussion explored the relationship between incarcerated adults’ PIAAC reading component skills and literacy and passage comprehension performance, characteristics and skill levels of incarcerated adults with less than a high school education, the role of learning in the lives of incarcerated adults with low skills, and the degree to which demographic factors and learning-related cognitive skills are associated with educational-programming desire among the U.S. prison population. Lionel Smith will also be presenting on theEducational Aspiration among People in Prison and shared some of his expertise.

Chime in on their conversations! They have a wealth of practioner knowledge to share!

We also shared a link to information about the trends for Tablets in Corrections. and added to the conversation about compassion fatigue with Overwhelmed Teacher

Finally, in March, we hosted a panel discussion on the opioid epidemic. Check out the summary.

I hope you enjoyed March. Which topic was of most interest to you?

Sincerely,
Kathy
