ICYMI: November Discussions and Looking Toward December

November was a busy month and we had several great discussions in the Science Community of Practice. Check out these topics.

We started with the discussion What background knowledge in science do students bring to the classroom? I posed the question about students lacking background knowledge in the science content area. In December, I hope to continue the conversation with the question about incorrect background knowledge.

We then talked about focusing activities. What are focusing activities and how can they be used in science eduction? We had some great interaction from peers as they shared some ideas about how they get their classroom started. Which idea was your favorite? Which one will you use in your classroom?

We ended the month with our most popular discussion - The connection between math and science instruction. Check it out. I hope to build on that topic early Spring when we look more closely at science instruction and specific careers which rely on science based knowlege.

I hope you enjoyed the topics. I'd love to hear your feedback and how you used this information in your professional experiences. December will build on these topics. Feel free to share your ideas, input, or strategies for science instruction.

Sincerely,
Kathy Tracey
