Intensive Skill and College Readiness Programs at Community Colleges

Intensive Skill and College Readiness Programs at Community Colleges will be an online discussion starting on November 7  and ending on November 11, 2016 from 9 am – 5 pm (EST).  This discussion will focus on postsecondary programming which provides opportunities in skill development, college and work readiness, competency development, and career guidance. The models and strategies introduced in this discussion will be drawn from the U.S. Department of Education's Supporting Student Success Project, and moderated by Kaitlyn Kos, Center for Educational Services at Gateway Community College and Mat Favre, Adult Learning Academy at St. Louis Community College.  In this discussion, two models which will be described include St. Louis Community College’s Academic Academy and the Academic Bootcamp at Gateway Community College. The goal will be to help generate discussion on student engagement experiences which help students become more prepared for college and increase retention. Participants in this discussion can pose questions, comments, as well as receive feedback from the moderators.

Hi, Sara -

This looks like a promising topic of conversation on several fronts.  I'm wondering if the term "skill development" used here refers to both academic and career and technical skills?  The inclusion of "college and work readiness, competency development, and career guidance" suggests that it may include Career and Technical Education (CTE) as well.  

If so, it would be great to invite our Career Pathways community members to add their perspective on learner engagement and retention in post-secondary CTE programs.

Hi John,

Of course you can join the conversation on Friday, Nov. 11th.  There is no specific agenda for each day of the week.  Rather, we will post a question regarding the topic, introduce the respondents on Monday, and they will respond to any/all questions the members pose regarding this programming.  So, you can join in on Friday with your comments/questions, and I'm sure that you'll get feedback.

On April 13, 2017, from 1-2 p.m. (ET), the U.S. Department of Education’s Supporting Student Success project team will host a webinar titled Supporting Student Success: The Hybrid Approach. The one-hour webinar will feature St. Louis Community College’s Adult Learning Academy (ALA). The ALA is an innovative approach to developmental education which integrates all promising practices identified by the Supporting Student Success project – acceleration, contextualization, and student support.

The Supporting Student Success project disseminates successful strategies in promoting student success in Adult Education and Developmental Education programming. This is the third of four webinars. Each webinar highlights a different promising approach to program design – contextualizationaccelerationstudent support, and a hybrid design model. The webinars feature community colleges implementing these practices, which are aimed at increasing the college transition and completion rates of lower-skilled learners at their institutions.

All webinars will be recorded and available for later viewing in the LINCS Community Postsecondary Completion group.
