Interested in becoming an Adult Literacy XPRIZE Competing Team Mentor, or in Helping Teams in Other Ways?

Reading and Writing Mavens,

You may have seen the LINCS Adult Literacy XPRIZE Announcement below. If you have questions about whether or not to offer your services you may wish to discuss that here. I would be glad to provide my independent perspective and, if there are questions that the XPRIZE Foundation staff would need to answer, to try to get answers from them for you.

Teams competing for the $7M Barbara Bush Foundation Adult Literacy XPRIZE can use your help!

Did you know that over 36 million adults in the United States—and 780 million adults worldwide—lack basic literacy skills? That’s nearly 1 out of every 6 adults who struggle to understand prescription information, fill out job applications, or read a bedtime story to their children.

The Barbara Bush Foundation Adult Literacy XPRIZE presented by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation is a global competition to develop mobile software that results in the greatest increase in literacy skills among adult learners. While Team Registration for the competition has closed, there are still ways for you to support competitors and the millions of learners for whom they are building learning tools.

Are you interested in being an Adult Literacy XPRIZE Team Mentor?

Educators, practitioners, and researchers can apply to mentor or support competing Adult Literacy XPRIZE teams. If you are interested, here’s how to sign up.

  1. Go to http://adultliteracy.xprize.org/get-involved
  2. Scroll down to Become a Mentor and select the BECOME A MENTOR button.
  3. If you have not registered, select the “SIGN UP TODAY!” button and create an account.
  4. Once registered, log in and complete a Mentor Profile. You can also then read the competition Team Profiles. Mentors and teams can contact one another directly in the system.

If you have difficulty with any of these steps, contact Adult.Literacy@xprize.org

Are you interested in matching teams with learners, or offering services?

Teams are always looking for access to great resources. As competing teams develop their prototypes, they need to work with adult learners to test the relevance and appropriateness of their designs. Help teams connect with learners in your programs. If you can offer teams valuable access and resources, please email the XPRIZE team at Adult.Literacy@xprize.org and they can share your offer with our competitors.
