Just Released: College and Career Readiness (CCR) Standards for Adult Education

The work is the result of a nine-month process that examined the Common Core State Standards from the perspective of adult education. It was funded to provide a set of manageable yet significant CCR standards that reflect broad agreement among subject matter experts in adult education about what is desirable for adult students to know to be prepared for the rigors of postsecondary education and training.

The report, available at: http://lincs.ed.gov/publications/pdf/CCRStandardsAdultEd.pdf, was written by Susan Pimentel, prepared by MPR, Associates, Inc. for the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Vocational and Adult Education.

My thoughts are unless the teachers are provided with the professional development that is necessary for them to learn a different style of teaching and be able to meet the demands of the 21st century traditional and non-traditional  student, the change in the standards will not make a effective impact. A holistic approach to teaching has to take place in the classroom. We can't ask our students to develop themselves and obtain a skill if we as teachers are unable to do the same. I think that the report will not make an impact if there is no collaboration and shared professional development  between adult educators, developmental educators and college credit instructors working together to align the programs and discuss ways to ensure student success.

In my dreams it provides a clear road map for developing our program into one that truly moves adults into College and Careers (not just a job). We have mostly warehouse work here and while it is good work, I want to see my students able to move into the supervisory and team leader positions. In reality we are so far down the totempole of concern in adoption of the Common Core Standards in our school district that I hadn't even heard of this report and I will probably be the only one to read it. Mind you our program has a total teaching staff of 4 and one district supervisor who is the curriculum director for the entire K-12+ program and we are all going flat out to get to the end of the year and figure out how to meet the changes in the GED.

As I end this I am off to get the report.
