Lots of technology sessions at COABE this year!

Hi all,

I was just looking over the sessions for COABE 2018 and I'm excited to see so many technology sessions!  I'd love to hear from any other presenters in the group, and also which sessions people who are going to attend COABE are particularly excited about.  Here's the link to the sessions by date

I'm presenting a few times but i'm most excited about the preconception session I'm doing because we will have the whole day to work together and get some real hands on experience.  The preconfernce session is called "Five Free and Easy to Use Tools to Make Your Content Mobile-Friendly" and it's on Sunday, March 25th 8:30am-3:30pm.

Here's the description: "According to Pew Research, as of April 1, 2015, just over one in ten American adults access the internet using only their phones. Combine this fact with the definition of digital literacy referred to by WIOA, “the skills associated with using technology to enable users to find, evaluate, organize, create, and communicate information,” and the importance of making our content available on mobile devices can no longer be ignored. In this preconference session, learn about some free tools that are easy to use to take the content you already have and make it mobile-friendly. These tools include Weebly, Padlet, Vocaroo, Google Forms, and QR Codes. By the end of the session, you will make your content mobile-friendly using at least one of these tools. Participants should bring a laptop or tablet for hands-on experience."

best,

Nell

Comments

Thanks, Nell, for getting the ball rolling. I would also like to hear from others who are presenting technology and adult basic skills education sessions at COABE 2018. COABE 2018 presenters, please tell us about your technology sessions in this discussion thread.

Thanks for the prompt, David!

On Tuesday at COABE, from 2-3:15 pm I am presenting, "Evaluating the Flipped Approach: How Can It Work for My Learners?"  (in room CC102B)
This is one of my favorite sessions - we bust myths about 'flipping', look at how it aligns with excellence in Adult Ed instruction and discuss how instructors can start integrating these ideas (or integrate them further) with their learners. There are MANY cool ways to improve your instruction (and integrate tech) with ideas from the flipped approach!  If you are interested in this session, I encourage you to “flip” your PD by completing these 3 quick pre-session tasks that will inform and enhance workshop activities.

Official description: This session provides an overview of the flipped learning approach to teaching and learning. “Flipped learning” is a flexible approach to instruction using active, learner-centered activities and technology integration to build critical thinking skills, support independent learning, and motivate learners. The strategies discussed are designed to support state and local level efforts to deliver individualized learning and extend learning time via effective use of blended learning and integration of educational technologies. In addition, this session builds practitioner awareness of the *Adult Education Teacher Competencies* and the need for critical thinking and planning for "new" instructional initiatives and practices.

In addition, on Wednesday, March 28th 11:00am-12:15pm, (room CC102B) I am presenting: "Reboot Your Digital Literacy"
This session integrates national initiatives from both OCTAE and the Institute of Library Science to increase adult learners' access to and use of digital tools for learning. Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop or netbook (tablet ok) in order to explore and discuss sites during the presentation.

Official Description: The Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education (OCTAE), the U.S. Department of Education, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) have been working together to enhance the skills, employability, and quality of life of youths and adults with low skills, with a particular focus on improving digital literacy. In this session, learn how your program and students can take advantage of these national developments in digital literacy and online access. Watch demos of helpful online resources and tools to get your teachers, tutors, and students “connected” and engaging in effective online learning. Bring your own device (BYOD) for hands-on exploration of suggested resources (laptop or netbook recommended).

In addition, I plan to spend some time at the LINCS booth - to share what cool resources LINCS has for practitioners and to talk further about my presentation topics (or any other cool technology integration/digital literacy stuff!) I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone there!
