Make a Wish-- First Day of Class Activity

Hello colleagues, Many of us will start our fall class soon. When I start a new class, of course, I want every student to feel welcome. I always want to be sure that I learn each student's name and how to pronounce it properly. We also usually do some kind of activity to help students get acquainted with one another.

Check out this brief video of English teacher Sarah Wessling that shows how she asked students on the first day of class to "make a wish" --and to make a commitment related to their wish --for the class or school year. What a great way to get insights into what matters to learners.

What do you think of this idea? How do you plan to start your new class this fall?
