MedlinePlus - Online Health Tutorials

Hi Everyone,

Have you tried using the MedlinePlus Interactive Health Tutorials in your adult ed classes? They are self-paced online tutorials that use pictures and animations to supplement the text, which is read by audio. They are interactive and include quiz question to test knowledge. You can also get a printout of the texts to use offline for previewing vocabulary, reading practice or review.

The topics available include a huge range of health issues and a good selection of tests, surgeries and other procedures. So you can learn about a condition you have, or about a procedure that you are preparing for or deciding about.

You could use these tutorials to teach technical skills, reading comprehension or health literacy, among other things.

I have heard good things about the quality and ease of use, but I would love to hear more from teachers who have used these with adult students.

Please share your experience! Or if you haven't used these, try them out and let us know what you think.

Hi Julie:

I absolutely love this website.  The two main ways that I've used it:

(1) When students (or family members) mention a disease or condition and want to know more about it, I send them (or we all go to) MedlinePlus.  I have confidence that the information is accurate, up-to-date, written clearly, and won't distract them or confuse them with advertisements (this last point is a big deal).

(2) For students interested in going into a health career, the medical terminology tutorial is very helpful.  The tutorial is in short modules and includes:  breaking up terms, root words, "beginnings and endings" (prefixes and suffixes), abbreviations, and more. Students can do it at their own pace, repeat modules, use audio support, and practice online learning in a user-friendly environment.  One of the first hurtles in those stressful healthcare career programs is learning all the medical terminology.  Here's the link:  http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/medicalwords.html
