Mini White Boards

Hello Friends, I'm currently teaching a citizenship class. As part of the naturalization process, individuals must be prepared to write a sentence in response to a dictation. For example, a candidate might be asked to listen to the USCIS officer dictate the sentence, "The White House is in Washington D.C." and then write what they hear. Candidates only need to write one sentence correctly, and they are given three chances to do so. To prepare for this task, I use mini white boards and markers. I dictate a sentence, and students write what they hear. When they have finished writing, they hold up their white board, so I can check it for accuracy.

Using mini white boards for this purpose has worked well in my citizenship class. It occurs to me that there could be many other ways to use white boards as a way to formatively assess learners' skills and understanding. Has anyone used white boards in math class? How about in other content areas or for different purposes?

Cheers,

Susan
