National Academy of Sciences Reading and Writing resource

Hello,

I hope that those of you in instructional and program planning roles have had an opportunity to review the National Research Council's report on improving adult literacy instruction (2012). On the other hand, the 400+ plus pages may be a bit much for you.

Don't dispair! The good news is that the Academy's staff developed a very digestible document highlighting our understanding about adults' reading and writing skills.   The document is highlighted as a Resource on the LINCS home page at https://lincs.ed.gov  and thus is easily accessed. The text emphasizes how literacy skills develop in adults and some of what might go wrong. It's not a cookbook of solutions but certainly presents the research base on principles that are important to improving our instruction and in turn the learners' outcomes.

I think this brief document (about 30 pages) would be a valuable resource in an on-going discussion for developing teachers and tutors skills and understanding of adult literacy. For new staff to programs and for those of you developing new programs, you'll find the document a great resource for orienting the framework and direction for your program and professional development.

I will greatly value hearing your reactions to the document and how you have incorporated the information in your programs.

Regards,

Daryl
