A new *FREE* digital tool that shows the algebra connections to six careers

Hello All!

I came across a new resource that might be helpful in math classrooms that have access to technology.  The series is called "Get the Math" and is produced by THIRTEEN Productions, LLC.  Since many of us struggle with finding ways to contextualize algebra, these short videos give us six careers that use algebra: music, fashion, videogames, basketball, resturants, and special effects.  They give a challenge problem and show how they solved the challenge, too.  This seems to be a great resource to link the content of algebra to the real-world.  Check it out and let me know what you think, also, if you used it in the classroom - tell us how it went.

Best,
Brooke

P.S.  I plan to use the Basketball video in the upcoming weeks because we are going to be talking about maximum and minimum values!

Hello All!

I said I was going to use this lesson in my classroom and I did.  I used it to show Maximum Values for Quadratic equations.  I started with the video that is embedded in the website, then we moved on into the Challenge Question.  This challenge question was a true CHALLENGE - students debating back and forth.  When they thought they had the correct response, we walked through it with the site.

The students enjoyed seeing how Maximum Values really do exist and they aren't just something math teachers teach.  I am going to investigate using more of these lessons in class.   If anyone in the community uses one please post how the lesson went and any adjustments you made.  It would be great to hear from several of you.
