*NEW* LINCS resources

Hello all!

There have been several new resources added to different collections on the LINCS website but I think this new product is one that many of us have been waiting for.  There is a section of Mathematics in this standards so please take a minute and check it out!  Also, if you would post any comments, questions, suggestions, etc. on how you and your programs will address these new standards.

Hello all.

Kudos to the team that put this document together.

I looked through the mathematics section this morning. If you have limited time to read the document, I suggest you go through the paragraphs on page 110 and following: Rationales for the Selection of Standards for Mathematics by Conceptual Category. Those pages and page 8 of the document give a good feel for how the CCRS were arrived at and what their purpose is and is not.

Three points stood out to me:

1) There is an emphasis on understanding number relationships starting at the very begining - Level A. The document calls for a balance between concepts and skills.

2) Common Core (K-12) standards at the upper end that relate directly to STEM preparation were not included. That is the same kind of thinking that is behind some of the restructuring of community college developmental math classes where I am. Not everyone needs to know how to do matrices for their job.

3) The standards are test-driven. p. 110: These selections were based largely on the knowledge and skills needed to succeed on high-stakes assessments.

I was looking for input from employers. Besides rational numbers, what do employers need their workers to understand and be able to do? I did not see that quesiton answered in the document. Maybe that question belongs in another place. If so, why does the document title include "Career"?
