November 15th release, data from the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIACC), prison study -- Invitation to release event

 

The long awaited and highly anticipated PIACC prison study -- based on a national sample of U.S. prisoners including their skills, work experiences, education and training -- will be released on November 15th.  This study is the successor to the 1994 NAAL prison literacy report and 2003 NAAL report on prisoner literacy.  

 

Also on the 15th there will be a release event.  The public is invited to attend this event at the offices of the American Institutes for Research in Georgetown (Washington, D.C.) or to participate in this event remotely via a webcast.  Summary information will be presented starting at noon by the Acting Commissioner of the National Center for Education Statistics, U.S. Department of Education.

On November 15, 2016, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), of the U.S. Department of Education will be releasing the report Highlights from the U.S. PIAAC Survey of Incarcerated Adults: Their Skills, Work Experience, Education, and Training. The study of U.S. incarcerated adults is a nationally representative survey of the skills of incarcerated adults in state, federal, and private prisons. This study is part of the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), which surveyed adults in households in the U.S. and 33 other countries in 2012 and 2014. 

The release event will highlight information on the basic skills of incarcerated adults, how their skills compare with those of the U.S. household population, as well as the relationships between skills, education, job training and nonacademic experiences in prison, such as work assignments.
