OCTAE Releases Education Technology in Corrections Policy Report

Hello All,

Earlier this week OCTAE released the Education Technology in Corrections policy report.  The report, authored by Michelle Tolbert, wonderfully illustrates how Correctional Education programs across the country are successfully using technology to deliver education resources to their classrooms in a safe and secure way. The report sets out examples of successful programs not only in the U.S., but internationally as well; focusing on Australia, U.K. and New Zealand to highlight progress in technology access in corrections facilities around the world. I strongly encourage you to take a look through the report, paying special attention to information that can serve to aid a request to an administrator for additional support, access to more and better web-based resources, or connectivity itself. The report contains much important information and can be an amazing resource in making your case for better access.

Heather, this is music to my ears and a giant step for man and woman kind in correctional institutions. The challenges that the report lists are certainly real, and they need to be addressed eventually. However, the successes reported and creative approaches to having prisoners use technology  are significant, considering that we are so often limited by what we can do in correctional institutions. Hope. Thanks! Leecy

Hi Leecy,

I completely agree that this report provides hope that Correctional Ed is moving forward and if not embracing, then maybe at least recognizing, that technology is an integral part of the life of any person successfully functioning in society today. It was also extremely heartening to hear continuing reports that the programs highlighted in the report have actually already increased their access and functionality.  Now we just need to continue sharing those successes and helping other facilities and educators to implement successful projects!
