October Summary

October was an exciting month in the Reading and Writing Community of Practice!  Highlights of this month include:

  • Our continued discussion with Jeff Goumas, Build Your Own Toolkit with CrowdED Learning.  This discussion, which began in September, has highlighted the four components of reading on a bi-weekly schedule.  We began October by focusing on instructional strategies for teaching comprehension and how to integrate some of the resources highlighted in CrowdED into comprehension instruction.
  • In mid-October we moved on to fluency in which Jeff introduced us to some resources and ways to instruct this reading component.  Leecy added to the discussion by reiterating the importance of fluency instruction.
  • We ended October with a focus on vocabulary and grammar.  In November we are continuing this discussion with a focus on the integration and sharing of instructional resources.
  • Check out Leecy Wise's post for help with a common homophone.  If you have others, please share!
  • Additionally, Kathy St. John asked the group to share thoughts about asset-based instruction versus deficit-based instruction.  100% of the comments focused on strengths-based instruction! This sparked another discussion in the same thread about a book club based on Teaching to Strengths.  This is definitely a discussion I would like to continue!

Enjoy your Thanksgiving!
