PIAAC Survey results: Closer look

Hi,

I suppose most everyone is caught up in the NCAA basketball tournament, but in your remaining spare time I hope you have read a bit about the international literacy and numeracy assessment of adults (ages 16 - 65) in 23 countries. The results were released in October and have generated quite a bit of buzz both in terms of the US standings and then working on an agenda that can help develop our adults' skills. The findings are very clear about a relationship of poverty, social integration, education, youth and minority cohorts, and health status with literacy and numeracy scores. Not a pretty picture or if you prefer, a sobering set of graphics.

Several resource documents are available such as a brief slide presentation at the www.timetoreskill.org website. You'll find the presentation slides under the materials heading.

What might be the impact of these findings as you consider your program's community outreach efforts, instructional approaches, learner recruitment strategies, learner retention strategies, and curricular offerings? (Multiple choice considerations!)  Wouldn't these findings help you with your fund raising and community support efforts? They represent such a graphic of significant social and educational need that communities leaders and businesses might feel a stronger imperative to get involved with your program.

Hope that the findings will be useful to you. Let me know. Thanks.

Regards,

Daryl
