Reading Bait

Question from an Adult Ed instructor whose students don't have Internet connectivity: "Can anyone recommend very short stories for adults reading at 5th-6th grade reading levels? I can't get my students to get excited about reading since all the good and exciting stuff is usually way above their reading levels! I'm not looking for stories by adults talking about their lives and challenges. I'm looking for material that will captivate their interest right away through drama, suspense, humor, or similar emotional baits. Any recommendations?"

If you have suggestions, the instructor  can share them on a thumb drive or print them for students. Thanks! Leecy

The collection of web-based texts found at: http://csal.gsu.edu/content/library   may be a possibility. Although, the texts are accessed by going to the web, for those who don't have Internet connectivity, the adult ed. instructor can print out the texts (they are not very long) and give them to the students to read.

Thanks so much for the link, Daphne! I'll ask the instructor to look through the content to see if he can find the dramatic/emotional bait he wants, and to let me know so that I can pass on the information here. Even if the content doesn't meet his needs, there is a whole lot there that can meet other needs. For example, I was drawn to the "Families" category and found helpful information there for the Easy level. I found the Police Arrest Parents story. I was surprised at the ending:

The police and workers at the schools are unhappy that the parents do not do something. They think that parents should be responsible for keeping their kids in school. They decided to do something to make the parents responsible.

The police looked for these parents. Many of them were found and they were arrested.

What a great topic for discussion! Leecy
