Reading Great Books

Reading teachers,

Perhaps you teach adult basic skills or adult secondary education, or transition to college level students and you want them to read books. What books have you found that engage adult learners?

Here's an in intriguing list by author and New Yorker writer, David Denby, of engaging books for teenagers. I suspect that some of these books may also be of interest to adults. Which ones do you think might be of interest to your students?

When my grandson, 13 this year, responded, "Oh, Grandma! Reading is for the past century," I gasped. Thanks for sharing the list, David. I can't imagine that anyone would not be thrilled with To Kill a Mockingbird and similar stories, no matter what the age!

There is a whole movement toward creating exciting stories written in comic book form. I've just sent a few of those off and will report on how well they work to engage teens in reading. As for adults, at least those in our ABE programs, I think the trick is to keep up the drama and drastically reduce the reading levels. I would love to see suggestion on how to access great, free reading material written at the 5th-7th grade reading levels. What think?
