Reading is popular among ESL students

A few years ago I started a few study groups on Facebook. The two most popular were and are:

Songs to Learn English (Canciones para Aprender Ingles) and Readings in English (Lecturas). Two or three times a week I usually posted a song with lyrics on the screen on the Songs group, and a story, poem or article with vocabulary on the Readings group.

To become a member of a group people need to request membership, and the information about the groups is spread by word of mouth or via each Facebook person’s contacts and friends.

The Songs group shot up in popularity right away and I was very surprised and  pleased. The Readings  group grew a little more slowly, at least for the first year.

Well now they are about equal in membership, the Readings group only 30 members behind. Each is now approach 3000 members.

So … in my opinion this experience only proves that people who are studying English as a Second or Foreign Language like to read!!

Now my question is - what do your students read? Are there enough hard  copies of books? If not I can send you a list of some good sites to access for your class.

What wonderful news, Paul. I hope that the idea catches on in ABE, Family Literacy, and HSE, too! I would love to drop in, just as a guest observer to see how the Reading group interacts with resources and within the membership. I bet that others would like that, too. Would it be possible to give some of us temporary access for a week or so, just so that we can peek, without infringing on privacy? That would be great. Thanks! Leecy

Leecy, my Reading Group on Facebook (Lecturas) is open to anyone and is more like a depository than a class. My 'classes'  are on WhatsApp, and most of the students are members of the Facebook groups. A few weeks ago I discovered Facebook Live Streaming, and a session becomes a regular video once streaming the session is ended. One of them was viewed over 1000 times in 24 hours!!!!! So I am  going to post poems or stories while I read them out loud, like an audio-book.

So to visit or join my group, just go to #5 here:
