Recommendations for High-Quality Nonfiction Texts

Hi,

I'm looking for recommendations for high-quality nonfiction texts for adult English Language Learners. These texts would be used to support the English Language Proficiency Standards for Adult Education and the push toward more rigorous instruction. Materials could be print-based or in subscription form and would need to be applicable to a range of learners at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. I welcome your feedback. Thank you,

Hi Ruth, Many of us are on the look out for informational text these days. I have found, even with beginning level learners, that students are highly motivated by interesting nonfiction. For example, this semester we've read about what causes seasonal changes, as well as Groundhog's Day, and the Winter Olympics. Some online sources I have drawn from include newsela.com, ReadWorks.org and CommonLit.org.

When I taught a pre-CNA preparation class with advanced learners, I drew from the National Institute of Health Senior video series that is now on YouTube. These short videos are great because they offer a transcript which can be downloaded and used for a variety of language teaching activities. The National Institute on Aging has a site with many health-related articles that teachers may find appropriate depending on the class they are teaching.

Members, please let us know about other useful sources for informational text. Sharing is what makes LINCS such a great resource for all of us!
