The TEAL Center Fact Sheet No. 1: "Research-Based Writing Instruction" in our LINCS Resource Collection examines writing instruction for youth and adults, with attention to those who struggle to learn, based on findings from Writing Next (Graham & Perin, 2007) and a companion analysis, What We Know, What We Still Need to Know (Graham & Perin, 2007). Although these sources focus on younger adults, they provide direction for instruction with older adults as well.
The Fact Sheet lists instructional interventions with suggestions for contextualizing instruction among adults: strategy instruction, summarization, collaborative writing, setting specific product goals, word processing, sentence combining, prewriting activities, inquiry, process writing approach, and study of written models. Each is thoroughly described.
What are your favorite practices among those listed? Please share your thoughts and describe the student among whom you implement them.
