Resource: The Science of Health

Hi Everyone,

Have you seen this resource in the LINCS collection?

Health: The Science Inside

This is a 64 page booklet, written in an easy style with stories and pictures. It explains the science of health from a historical perspective as well as a practical one. It would be a great resource for upper level students. It would also be good for students hoping to go on to health career programs, or for GED prep.

I would love to hear from some of you who do GED prep how this may fit with the new GED. Please let us know what you think!

All the best,

Julie

Julie, many thanks for alerting us to this fantastic resource!  There are so many valuable things in the booklet, published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.  One could spend an entire semester using this booklet to teach basic skills.  For example, page 19 has a chart "Common Vaccinations", which talks about ages by which children should have vaccinations.  There are several questions we could ask that lead to an understanding of how to read a chart.  I especially liked " Twenty-first century health challenges".  Science-based medicine...I love it!!

For people who might consider taking part in a research study, Appendix 1 is "Taking Part in Research Studies--Questions to Ask".  Appendix 2 is invaluable: "Ten Things to Know about Evaluating Medical Resources on the Web."

I agree with Julie:  it would be great to hear from people who teach high-school completion programs.  The 2014 GED Science test has a large focus on health.  What do you think about this resource?
