Resources for Learning About Health Insurance

Hi Everyone,

The Centers for Medicaid Services have put out some materials to help educate people who are newly signed up for health insurance. I have not looked carefully at these yet, and am assuming that they will only be appropriate for high level learners, but I want to pass on this information.

Best,

Julie

There are a lot of conversations on the listserv about the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and how consumers will sustain their health insurance, most of whom are learning about health insurance for the very first time. These consumers should be aware of their responsibilities for paying premiums and learn about other terms related to health insurance in plain language.

For those interested in educational materials, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has developed products that can be used for training purposes and for helping these new consumers “Understand the Health Insurance Marketplace.”  When planning your health literacy workshops and conducting other related educational activities, these resources are located on two Health Insurance Marketplace websites shown in the links below:

These resources may be helpful, especially for colleges/universities and community based education sessions to help provide communities learn more about health insurance.

Hi Julie,

I thought everyone might find another resource useful. For folks not covered by traditional employer-sponsored insurance, either because they're part-time workers, self-employed, or entrepreneurs -- the health insurance landscape is quite different. I put together an in-depth guide for individual health insurance plan coverage. It goes through the basics of HMO, PPO, POS and then describes coverage levels. Ultimately, the point is to reach an affordable option. I hope the guide helps the community.
