Self-Directed Learning

Self -directed learning (SDL) is a “process in which individuals take the initiative, without the help of others” in planning, carrying out, and evaluating their own learning experiences" (Knowles, 1975).

As you have probably experienced, SDL can be difficult for some, and, clearly not all learners prefer the self -directed option, asking for and even demanding more formal,  teacher-directed instruction. I am always intrigued (amused?) when I hear adults in our programs demand that teachers tell them what to do when they dropped out of the systems that did just that!

What tips can you share on helping students transition into more SDL in your instruction? What is your "take" on this issue?
