Some discussions you may have missed

Hello colleagues, I am highlighting some valuable discussions in our community that you may want to check out in case you missed them.

Vocabulary Myths

Come contribute to this discussion on 8 myths about teaching and learning vocabulary.

  • Is using lists to learn new vocabulary words helpful?
  • How many words should teachers introduce at a time?
  • Does research show that presenting new vocabulary in semantic sets (e.g., weather words such as windy, sunny, cloudy, etc.) effective or ineffective?

Time Management for Test Taking

The TABE test is timed. The GED and other high school equivalency tests are timed. Many other high stakes tests that students need to take are timed. Language learners almost always need far more time than is allowed on these tests.

  • How do you help students to manage their time so they can be most successful on a timed test?
  • Do you engage students in timed readings to prepare? If so what have been the results?
  • What time management techniques have been especially effective with language learners?

Discussion on Teaching Grammar with David Kehe

David Kehe, a well-known author of ESL textbooks, joined us on LINCS for a special discussion about teaching grammar. David shared many wonderful ideas and resources with us, including responses to the following questions:

  • What are your thoughts about the importance of grammar terminology in teaching grammar?
  • If grammar terms are important, what are some ways to teach this terminology in meaningful and learner-centered ways?
  • What are “ear learners” and what particular challenges do these learners face with English grammar, especially in writing? How can teachers effectively address these challenges?

Thanks for being part of our wonderful network of adult literacy practitioners!
