The Spirit Catches You...Literature Informing Health Care

Hi Everyone,

I want to share something that Helen Osborn sent to the list:

Many of us on this list treasure the book "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Clash of Two Cultures" by Ann Fadiman. On Page 1 of today's New York Times (9/15/12), there is an obituary about Lia Lee, the then-little girl who was at the center of this compelling story about culture and medicine. Here's the link, http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/15/us/life-went-on-around-her-redefining-care-by-bridging-a-divide.html

Many years ago when I co-moderated this listserv, I had the honor of interviewing Ann Fadiman about her remarkable book. Several people on this list contributed questions. I probably have our Q&A somewhere in my files. Hopefully, it's also in our list archives. Thought that many of you would want to know about Lia. ~Helen

This book has been recommended or required reading in health literacy and medical courses for years, and I wonder if anyone could share what they learned by reading it.

We talk often about the power of story and this is one great example. Are there any other stories or books that have informed you around health literacy?
