Techniques for Teaching Note-Taking

Hello colleagues, Taking notes is a skill that often needs to be taught. If you teach note-taking, how have you approached it? Do you have learners take notes when viewing videos? Our own David Rosen, who moderates the LINCS Integrating Technology COP, explores a number of helpful resources, including lesson plans, for teaching this important skill in this Ed Tech blog.

Thanks for sharing your practices and your ideas for teaching note-taking with us here.

Hi Susan,

This is a great question! I find my students who are working at a distance via an online course are the most vulnerable for not taking notes. I often give students mind maps or outlines for the chapter or article I want the student to work with. But I have found that I need to give students a template or model for note taking as they try to write everything. However, what I have also learned is that many of my students have often lost or misplaced their notes. Keeping track and organization is a skill that needs to be combined with notetaking. I'd love some examples of how teachers combine both the notetaking and organization.
