Project Based Learning 2.0

Strand: Technology

Session: C303

Most of us have some experience with projects in a classroom, but what makes classroom projects authentic project-based learning in 2013?  Recent models of PBL can be used to advance learners’ research and critical thinking skills, enrich and strengthen communication skills and improve “soft” skills such as teamwork, while simultaneously incorporating real-life technology skills. The PBL approach emphasizes problem solving and, according to research, supports certain key characteristics of adult learning. This presentation reviews concrete steps for using PBL in your classroom and will provide practical ideas for creating engaging project-based learning using Web 2.0 technology.

Computer Essentials Online:  Digital Literacy for Adult Learners

Strand: Digital Literacy

Session: C406

True adult literacy is broader than merely reading and writing. We cannot consider our adult learners ready for the job market or continuing education until they can use computers and the Internet successfully. But how do we fit computer literacy skills into an already overloaded curriculum of adult literacy and numeracy? The solution is an online distance learning digital literacy skills course that students can work on at home and in the classroom, a course for teaching adults everything they need to know to meet the needs of the 21st Century job market, a course that teaches itself and that doesn’t require you to become an expert in computer literacy skills.

Teach Technology, Standards, Transition, and GED All at Once

Strand: Technology

Session: D403

Basic Skills programs have these four mandates: to build Standards-based curriculum, to transition students to further training, to prepare students for completing the GED, and to generate CASAS post-test gains.  In addition, transition is realistic only when students have technology skills.  These separate mandates can result in ongoing fragmented lessons. My solution has been Standards-based writing group projects that at once sustain transition, address the GED test, and constantly integrate technology.  With frequent use of laptops and online resources, students begin to recognize themselves as capable of taking part in higher education.

Comments

Nell, I like what you have started here. A couple weeks back I was talking with Thom Coffee of Eminence Independent Schools here in Kentucky. He mentioned how he and the superintendent use Google Docs to "team note take," ie they would both write to the same document in the same meeting. I wonder if you'd want to share the document with those that request, and then we could all add notes to it over the course of the conference? I'm game to try it out. After the conference you could share it with the listserv again. Barry

Hi Barry and all,

I like the idea of team notetakeing.  I usually use Twitter as my notetaking tool during conference sessions but I would be interested in trying a google document for this purpose.  What are some elements we would want in the google doc?  I can imagine a document that lists all the sessions with space for people to add their notes?

best,

Nell

I like twitter as a crowd sourcing tool - it's great to look at people's messages throughout the day. But as far as a note taking tool I find it is confusing because of the weave of conscious that comes from the  nature of the tool. I envision the document above being shared with those who want to participate. Then as people are in the session they could add notes beneath each header. Even if multiple people are in the same session I would think the individual notes would all add allowing for different perspectives. Using the Google Drive app those involved could participate from their smart phone, tablet, and/or laptop. Also, just because one is using google docs does not mean they can't be tweeting. It could be interesting to join #COABE2013 tags to the notes afterwards. Further, one could add pictures, audio files or video... Maybe the presenter could even be encouraged to add information (resources, links, handouts, etc.) to the page.  Then after the conference post the final, static document - not curated or edited, just shared with the community after the conference is complete. I think this is a very interesting experiment :) Barry

Nell -  Thanks for your work pulling these into one document.  I just wish some of them were going to be repeated throughout the conference.  There are times when I would like to attend multiple offerings in a single time frame.

Hi Kris,

I will work on finding out more on what sessions at COABE may be offered via live streaming.  Certainly consider following the COABE13 hashtag in Twitter.  You can do this even if you don't have a Twitter account by using Tweetchat.com--just stick #COABE13 in the search bar at the top and you will geta live feed of all the tweets using that hashtag.

best,

Nell

Thanks for checking on the live streaming. Will any of the presenters' handouts/website links be posted anywhere as well? That would certainly be a great resource for those of us who cannot be there in person.

Tiffany

Since I am going to TESOL and not COABE. I will share my stuff with all of you on Twitter. But be sure to check out #tesol13 for other stuff. TESOL is the week before COABE

I've found that using a graphic organizer helps with group note taking/writing. It keeps people from writing over each other and gives some organization to a multi-author document.  When I take notes at a conference, I divide my document into a table wtih three columns:  notes, ideas, action steps.  Notes is a summary of the information, ideas are any thoughts for application or other related ideas that come from the presentation and action steps are the firm things that I know I need to do after the conference.

Does anyone have any thoughts about whether a graphic organizer might be helpful in this case and if so, what it would look like?

I won't be attending COABE this year so I appreciate everyone's efforts to share the info with those of us that won't be in New Orleans!  Thanks!

If you have a graphic organizer in Word, just import it into google docs. Share that document as a kind of "template" with a group and then have them compile "notes" as a class together using google docs and the graphic organizer as the template. I think that would be the best of both worlds. Great idea!

Hi all,

I have created a Google doc for our COABE 13 note taking—I included a table format to help keep us organized.  To get to the document got to this link http://bit.ly/COABENotes

The LINCS Professional Development group is using a wiki for the same purpose so it will be interesting to see how our efforts compare. https://community.lincs.ed.gov/discussion/wiki-page-note-taking-coabe-2013  http://wiki.literacytent.org/index.php/COABE2013

best,

Nell

GOT IT!  I am set up and looking forward to participating, as well as seeing what everyone is doing. I'm going to go ahead and put my name on sessions I will be joining :)

Thanks Nell, I think this will be pretty cool!

Destiny's idea of a graphic organizer looks great. I'm going to see if I can copy and paste it to the sessions I will be attending. For me I think a mixture of Nells original document with the graphic organizer will be a huge asset.

Barry

Thank you from someone who is not able to attend COABE.  Professional development dollars are all too scarce.   I'm an ESOL teacher, employed part time, working hard to stay abreast of what is happening in adult education and technology.    By sharing your thoughts and nuggets of wisdom from COABE you are reaching a wider audience.  In other words, your efforts are truly serving a purpose!   Thanks, and I'll be reading!  Susan W in Virginia

Thanks, Nell for posting the details on the technology sessions.  I was the lead presenter on the English Innovations sessions (together with Ada Williams-Prince from One America). In the session, we presented a model which combines digital literacy, on-line ESL, in class conversation circles and high interest video (We are New York). I also am part of the Learner Web, looking at how tutor supported digital literacy can be used with dual language learners  (we are using "dual language" to head off atavistic responses to bilingual teaching). If anyone would like more info on the models let me know - also, if you are teaching digital literacy skills as part of an ESL program (hello, Susan Gaer), let me know. I'm writing a paper for the Gates Foundationt and would love to cite your work.
