Technology Tools for Teaching Vocabulary

Hi everyone, Here is a link to an article that highlights some interesting technology tools for teaching and assessing vocabulary. I have used Word Sift and Wordle for creating word clouds, which can be fun and useful. Have you used word clouds in your teaching? If so, in what ways?

Another internet tool I would add to this list is Tom Cobb's Vocabulary Profiler. At this site, you can copy and paste any text and get an instant analysis of the words. I have been most interested in identifying words from the Academic Word List from materials I'm using in class to help me prioritize the words I teach within a meaningful context.

I'm uploading an example of how the Vocab Profiler text appears after analysis. The blue words are the 1000 most common words in English from the General Service List (GSL). The green words are the second 1000 most common words from the GSL. The yellow words are from the Academic Word List, and the red words are off list words, which means they are content or context specific. This text comes from beehive.com.

What tech tools have you found to be useful for teaching vocabulary? In what ways can you see the Vocab Profiler being useful?

Cheers, Susan
