Cultural Competence in the Adult ELL Classroom: A Funds of Knowledge Approach (SC30) 

This study circle builds on the increased understanding of culture developed in the online course, The Role of Culture in the Education of Adult English Language Learners (OC04). In particular, it explores in greater depth how a 'funds of knowledge' approach (Moll et al. 1992) can enhance the language learning experience of adult English language learners (ELLs) by helping them to build on what is cognitively familiar (Genzuk 1999).

Teaching Strategies for Bottom-up and Top-down Literacy Instruction for Emergent Readers (SC29)

This one-session "quick study" will expand upon the lessons learned from the online course Teaching Adult ELLS Who Are Emergent Readers (OC02). Participants will develop a deeper understanding regarding teaching adult English language learners (ELLs) who are just beginning to acquire print literacy largely due to lack of access to formal schooling.

Using Formative Assessment to Ensure Lesson Objectives are Met (SC31)   

Participants in this study circle will dive deeper into the lessons learned from the online course Formative Assessment to Inform Quality Adult ESL Instruction (OC03). The instructor will lead study circle participants in examining formative assessment's integral role in systematically planning and delivering adult ESL instruction.
