Transitions strand at COABE 2013

I am excited to count and put together a document of the Transitions strand at COABE with 42 workshops! The National College Transition Network is sponsoring the Transitions strand at the conference.

Here are some of the highlights (and a bit of self-promotion!):

Sunday, March 24th
8:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Building Aspirations of Adult Learners Toward College & Careers - This half-day session will detail some program and instructional practices that are designed to affirm aspirations, foster self-efficacy and nurture resilience of the college-bound transition students. Classroom-ready, student success focused tools and activities such as time management, study skills, and financial planning for college will also be shared.
PRESENTER(S): Priyanka Sharma, Coordinator, National College Transition Network, World Education, Inc.

Monday, March 25th
10:30 AM - 11:45 AM

Strategies for Successful Students - This workshop presents five strategies that students at any level can use to improve their memory and academic performance. The five sets of strategies are based on evidence from neuroscience about how long-term memory works, research on self-affirmation and self-efficacy theory, and study habits of successful students.
PRESENTER(S): Silja Kallenbach, Vice President, World Education, Inc.

Monday, March 25th
3:30 PM - 4:45 PM

College and Career Readiness Activities for Your Classroom - Come explore how your program can better support college and career readiness for adults. This workshop will focus on adult students’ barriers to postsecondary education and on classroom activities and practices that help them overcome those barriers. Participants will receive classroom-ready resources developed by the National College Transition Network.
PRESENTER(S): Priyanka Sharma, Coordinator, National College Transition Network, World Education

Tuesday, March 26th
9:15 AM - 10:30 AM

Blueprint for Community-Based Financial Education - Financial education is not typically taught in school so most adults only have the examples of friends and family to follow when it comes to personal finance. This can cause poor financial habits to develop, and these courses and websites aim to overcome this and teach positive financial behavior for all life stages and financial needs. The National Endowment for Financial Education is committed to the financial education of all Americans and aims to facilitate positive and sound financial decision making.
PRESENTER(S): Mary Jeannette Schultz, Project Manager National Endowment for Financial Education and Priyanka Sharma, Coordinator, National College Transition Network, World Education

Wednesday, March 27th
3:30 PM - 4:45 PM

Strengthening Adults' Personal Readiness for College and Career Success - The National College Transition Network at World Education identifies four areas of college and career readiness: personal, career, academic, and college knowledge. These areas represent the types of knowledge, skills, and preparation that adult learners need to be successful along their educational and career pathway. This session will provide an overview of this model with a specific focus on the area of personal readiness. Participants will learn new approaches and receive tools aimed at adult learners' ability to anticipate and address challenges, see oneself as a learner and juggle multiple commitments while managing stress and time.
PRESENTER(S): Ellen Hewett, Director, National College Transition Network at World Education, Inc.
