These courses are available free to adult literacy educators, tutors, and volunteers serving Virginia learners in program funded through the Virginia Department of Education's Office of Adult Education and Literacy and/or the Virginia Literacy Foundation. They are available to out-of-state participants and non-OAEL or VLF funded programs for a fee. Please see the course descriptions at http://www.valrc.org/trainings/onlinecourses.html for the fees charged for the course for which you wish to enroll. If you are interested in these online courses but are outside of Virginia or working in a non-OAEL or VLF funded program, please contact Joanne Huebner at courses@valrc.org for payment methods.

Online courses are asynchronous (not in real time) and are self-paced. Expect to devote about three to five hours per week to the discussion and assignment.  Participate in class when it's convenient for you!  If you have any questions at all about participating in this exciting professional development opportunity then please contact me at 1-800-237-0178 or email me at courses@valrc.org.

Go to: http://www.valrc.org/trainings/onlinecourses.html for more information about the courses.

The registration process is as follows:

Go to: http://www.valrc.org/trainings/ero.html. You will find a manual here that will lead you through how to create a profile in our new registration system if you have not already created one. If you have, please click the link to enter ERO and follow the instructions below.

You must register for the "How To Be a Good Online Learner" short course as it is a prerequisite for enrollment in the longer, facilitated courses. You will not be able to register directly for the courses listed above as you must complete the "How To Be a Good Online Learner" short course first. If you have previously completed and been marked as attended for the "How To Be a Good Online Learner" short course, please go to Step #5.

Once you have submitted your registration, please allow up to 3 business days for the receipt of your "How To Be a Good Online Learner" short course enrollment confirmation.  You will receive two emails, one email is automatically generated from the ERO system confirming your registration and the second is an email with information about the course and how to login.

After you have gone through the "How To Be a Good Online Learner" short course, you will find the Online Learning Contracts in a folder contained in the short course.  If you finished the short course for a previous session, you will just return to the course and go to the contracts folder. Download, fill out, and email the contract for the course you wish to take to courses@valrc.org. You will then be enrolled in the course if there is still space remaining. Please be sure to promptly send in your Online Learning Contract so that you can ensure a spot in the course of your choice!

As a courtesy to facilitators and other participants, please do not register for a course unless you are sure that you are able to devote the time necessary to complete the course. If you find at a time after registration that you will be unable to complete the course, please let the facilitator know as soon as possible so that your spot may be offered to someone on the waiting list.

Please note that these courses do not provide college credit.  They are, however, eligible for use in teacher recertification.
