"The Adult Numeracy Network Presents:
Put on Your Own Math Before Assisting Students"

Date: Friday, February 15, 2019
Time: 2:00-3:00 p.m. EST
Presented by: Heidi Schuler-Jones and Stephanie Stewart-Reese

In keeping with the theme of the 2018 COABE conference, the Adult Numeracy Network wants to remind you that when flying at these new higher altitudes of math standards and assessment, we need to put on our own "math" before assisting our students. Regardless of the level of math that you teach, having increased content knowledge will equip you to better explain concepts to students and give you more avenues to connect with their background knowledge as you listen to students explain their reasoning.

This one-hour webinar will highlight one hands-on and collaborative activity to deepen your own math content knowledge in various areas and at various levels (so you will benefit regardless of the math you know or teach). Plus, since our own learning is ongoing, just like that of our students, you will also leave with specific resources and strategies for continued mathematical learning after the webinar.

Session Objectives:
  1. Participants will deepen their understanding of one or more mathematics content area(s) of the College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS).
  2. Participants will develop their understanding of how their level of mathematics content knowledge contributes to the learning experience of their students.
  3. Participants will increase their awareness of their own strengths and/or gaps in mathematics content knowledge.
  4. Participants will gain specific strategies and resources for continued learning after the webinar.
  5. Participants will learn about the value of a low-floor and high-ceiling activity.
Webinar space is limited to 500 and is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

You will need your membership ID to register for this webinar.
Please contact info@coabe.org if you have any questions.

Please Note: Certificates are automatically emailed 24 hours after the webinar has ended.

More About Our Presenters

Heidi Schuler-Jones started working in adult education in north Georgia in 2006. In 2010, she participated in the pilot program of the Adult Numeracy Initiative PD (ANI) in Georgia and immediately found its techniques, methodologies, and research-based resources to be of tremendous value to her teaching and to the variety of students she saw daily. She has been a facilitator of the ANI training since 2012 when she became a LINCS national trainer for adult numeracy.  She also works with LINCS to facilitate online PD offerings such as Open Educational Resources (OER), including STEM-focused resources, and Teaching Excellence in Adult Education (TEAL), particularly Effective Lesson Planning.

Though no longer in the classroom, Heidi remains connected to adult education on a regular basis. She serves as the Adult Numeracy Network (ANN) secretary and is a COABE member. She currently works full-time as an educational consultant and professional development specialist and in 2017 co-developed an accelerated math curriculum for Massachusetts in partnership with Donna Curry at the Adult Numeracy Center (ANC) at Technical Education Resource Center (TERC) in Cambridge, MA. She also works with TERC to facilitate the Adults Reaching Algebra Readiness [(AR)2] professional development, a follow-up training to the ANI.

Stephanie Stewart is an Adult Basic Education Lead Mathematics Instructor, teaching multiple mathematics courses, meeting the needs of adult students at varying educational functioning levels. Ms. Stewart also develops and delivers mathematics professional development for the Rio Salado College - College Bridge Pathways program and the Arizona Department of Education, Adult Education Services, including the newly revised Arizona Adult Education Standards for Mathematics, for which she was part of the five-member revision team.

Ms. Stewart participated in the OCTAE College and Career Readiness Standards-in-Action Project, adapting materials and facilitating training of SIA Mathematics innovations for statewide implementation and acting as a resource for state programs. She also served as a mathematics coach for the OCTAE College and Career Readiness Implementation Institute, serving as a resource for state teams.

Ms. Stewart conducted the math curriculum/standards alignment for the Rio Salado College - College Bridge Pathways Program in 2014.  In 2016 she led the Math Curriculum Development Team for the program, developing comprehensive, standards-aligned adult education math curriculum, and developing and delivering the corresponding professional development. This curriculum resulted in a 15% increase in educational gains program-wide. In collaboration with the Arizona Department of Education, Ms. Stewart served as one of a five-member content work group on the Arizona Adult Education Standards Revision Initiative. The team performed a comprehensive alignment between previous AZ Adult Math Standards, AZ K-12 Math Standards, and College and Career Readiness Standards, drafting completely new documentation with usability for instructors in order to increase student learning as the primary objective.

She is a Regional Representative for the Adult Numeracy Network, a community dedicated to quality mathematics instruction at the adult level. Stephanie graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.S. in human development and is certified in adult learning and development.
