Wednesday Question: America’s Clean Power Plan – Discussing Climate Change

Hello everyone!

As a community of practice, we create the "social fabric of learning" for ourselves. That's difficult to do if we aren't sharing our thoughts and strategies as much as we'd like to!

I'd like to help us get the ball rolling. What if we have a “question of the week” as a conversation starter -- in addition to group members initiating conversations? I could pose it for you to consider and respond to (or not! :) ).  And you could send me a question at any time and I'd be happy to raise it as the question-of-the-week. Wednesdays may be a good day for it, after the craziness of the week’s beginning is behind us! Please let me know if you like this idea, and what your thoughts are on the questions below.

Wednesday Question: Climate Change

On Monday, August 3, President Obama announced the Clean Power Plan to fight against climate change.

“Our power plants are responsible for about a third of America's carbon pollution -- more than our cars, airplanes, and homes combined -- and that pollution is fueling climate change.”

The plan sets the first-ever carbon pollution standards for power plants. It aims to cut CO2 emissions from electric utilities 32 percent below 2005 levels by 2030. It also provides states and utilities flexibility to meet those standards by setting state level goals for reducing CO2 emissions.

The White House has some very informative videos and interactive infographics published here.

So...

  • What do your students think about climate change? What do you think about it?
  • What activities have you used to teach adult learners about climate change? Help them understand the issues?
  • What resources have you found most useful, and why?

The more we share, the more we can discover what will help us in class tomorrow.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Jackie
