My name's Amy and I teach in a men's prison.  Many of my students are low-level readers.  I love science and enjoy using some of National Geographic's low level readers for my students.  I also adapt a lot of higher level texts.  I'm considering getting a subscription to the Sciencea-z.com website so I can download readers and lessons for students.  Anyone use other (free?) online materials?

Hello, Amy,

You've asked us a great question about online resources.  Because you teach in a prison, do you need resources that always have printable materials you can download?  Can you use one computer for demonstrations of website content to your group of learners?  What access to computers is allowed for learners?

Perhaps others of you who work in prisons can answer Amy's questions.  I know that there is a wide variety of rules in prisons about the use of online resources.  It varies state-by-state, but also can vary between institutions within states.

My name is Valerie Tomaselli and I run a small publishing services company called MTM Publishing.  I became interested in the LINCS Science Group due to particular publishing needs I have. One relates to a project my company has been asked to develop: a new test preparation book (print and online) for the 2014 GED test  (to be published by Learning Express). I am looking for any expertise folks might have about the science portion of the GED 2014; in fact I'm still looking for an author for the science test assessment items and review chapter.

I'm also quite interested in educators' understandings and evaluations of what the common core standards might mean for science education at the middle grade to high school levels and, by extension, what that might mean for nonfiction, reference, and text-books.
