What is Leadership's Role in Student Success?

As educational leaders and program administrators, our role is to create a learning environment and choose educational paths that promote learning for every student. With the boundaries between adult education and higher education / workforce development blurring in attempt to ensure smooth transitions for learning, transformational leadership is needed.

I invite you to read: Leadership for Learning: What is Leadership's Role in Supporting Success for Every Student? The brief paper discusses 'fidelity to purpose' where the culture and currency of a community is built on the foundation of our programs and the opportunities we provide students. (This can feel like a very daunting task!) We are expected to:

  • Develop skills and dispositions in students that lead to learning for life and productive participation in our democracy; to success in jobs that have yet to be invented; to developing and using skills that have yet to be defined; and to navigating an increasingly interdependent world.

  • Engage and motivate students to succeed at next levels, demonstrating their learning in ways and at times that are authentic, meaningful, and relevant.

  • Develop and practice agency by making decisions and receiving support in evaluating the impact of decisions in the context of their goals – purposefully connecting their education to their own futures and to a purpose bigger than themselves.

As educational leaders, what are you thoughts? Do you feel pressure to continually adapt to the changing times? What resources have helped you manage the changes in student expectations? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Regards,

Kathy Tracey
