Hello colleagues, The issue of race is central to our work in adult literacy education. There is a majority of white teachers in our field while adult learners in our programs are predominantly people of color. In this blog, Mohammed discusses a comment she has heard white teachers express, "I don't see color. I only see students." Mohammed acknowledges that this comment is likely to be well meaning, and she goes on to explain why this stance and these words can be complicated for students of color.
