World Social Justice Day

February 20th is the World Day of Social Justice. According to the United Nations, "Social justice is an underlying principle for peaceful and prosperous coexistence within and among nations. We uphold the principles of social justice when we promote gender equality or the rights of indigenous peoples and migrants. We advance social justice when we remove barriers that people face because of gender, age, race, ethnicity, religion, culture or disability."

I believe that adult educators, counselors and program administrators work towards social justice on a daily basis as they focus on providing an effective learning experience for their students. We all work to increase access to opportunities for them.

Do you think that your work connects with social justice? If yes, then how?

My educational background is in Social Justice with a specialization in education and training.

For me, Social Justice means equal opportunity and equal access.  When you really think about what a world with equal access and opportunity would look like, it's a tall order (and a huge change from the way things are now).  I am currently working as a GED and ESOL instructor and as a Transition Advisor.  I see this work as being all about promoting access and opportunity, so I believe that we work for Social Justice every day.
