The Office for Adult and Community Learning Services (ACLS) oversees the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s (ESE) adult basic education (ABE) programs. ACLS funds and monitors over 150 programs across the Commonwealth that provide adult basic education and English for Speakers of Other Languages services to over 20,000 adult students annually.

The Director for ACLS will report to the Associate Commissioner for Vocational, Workforce, and College Readiness Programs, and is responsible for ensuring that the ACLS unit accomplishes the goals outlined in the Massachusetts Strategic Framework for ABE. The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of a comprehensive and effective system of ABE. In addition, the Director for ACLS will also face a wide range of policy priorities including workforce preparedness, intergenerational literacy, successful reintegration of incarcerated adults, health education/tobacco cessation, citizenship, etc.
