What's in a Name?: Disabilities and Equitable Outcomes

Hello, Disabilities in Adult Education Members,

You may have seen the notice of some changes taking place in the LINCS Communities.  Beginning on Monday, March 27th, LINCS communities will begin to offer greater alignment with resources addressing the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). You will see that some communities are changing names, to address this shift.  The Disabilities in Adult Education community will be changing its name to Disabilities and Equitable Outcomes, in order to reflect WIOA's renewed commitment to providing greater equity around the needs of individuals with disabilities.  This change also reflects a focus on positive outcomes for these learners.

This group promotes the sharing of information, research, expertise, and resources on topics such as:

  • Causes and consequences of disabilities, including learning and physical disabilities and other impairments
  • Serving individuals with barriers to employment including individuals with disabilities
  • Teaching practices for equitable outcomes
  • Legal issues related to serving adults with disabilities
  • Classroom strategies, methods and materials
  • Assistive technology
  • Standardized testing
  • Accommodations

I am looking forward to expanding our discussions around disability and equity-related topics, but I need your help!  How does this name change reflect what you think this community should provide members?  What is your role in making that happen?  WIOA's focus on equity for all, and specifically persons with disabilities, is a unique opportunity for this group.  What do you want to see us become to answer the charge of supporting both access and positive outcomes for all of our adult learners?
