Alternatives to Round Robin Reading?

Hello colleagues, I'm guessing many of us can remember participating in round robin reading in school as kids. Round robin reading is the practice of having students take turns reading a text aloud in class. I can recall feeling super nervous waiting for my turn, and I bet others had a similar experience.

I have been aware for a long time that round robin reading  is not a recommended practice.  Could you share some of the reasons for this lack of endorsement?

If you are aware of some alternatives to this routine, please share your ideas here in our community.
