Black History Month

Hello colleagues, A resource I've relied on a lot when searching for useful texts to use in class is CommonLit. I like this site since it features resources at a range of levels from GLE 3 and up and  allows you to search topics. The site also has a read aloud feature which I greatly value since listening is an essential skill for learners to practice.

I just searched for Black History Month and found a great many poems and articles by and about African Americans that would be worthwhile. The poem "To Catch a Fish" by Eloise Greenfield would make a good choice for lower-level learners. One article I have used with great success was about Katherine Johnson who worked at NASA as a mathematician and was featured in the movie Hidden Figures.

Jennifer Gagliardi, moderator of the Civics Ed and Citizenship group, has posted a nice list of resources on Black History Month that many of you will be interested in checking out.

You are invited to share any of the materials you have valued on this topic here on LINCS.

Susan,

Thanks for posting this! CommonLit is so awesome. I love the practice activities it gives throughout a passage and then at the end as well. There is so much great content for BHM coming out this month. The CrowdED Learning Resource of the Month is this Black American History video series from Crash Course. A listening practice to go along with some reading practice from CommonLit!

We (at World Ed) are gathering free and/or open resources for Black History Month in this Padlet. Black History Month is our February theme in a year long CrowdED Learning resolution to promote sharing every month.

In addition to sharing Black History Month resources on this LINCS discussion, I hope you’ll explore the Padlet and post some things there as well!

Thanks so much, Rachel. This video series hosted by Clint Smith is fantastic. The series features 51 videos of 10-15 minutes each focused on a Black history topic including the slave trade, the Civil War, and biographies of important African Americans and much more. Any individual video would make a great resource for an instructional lesson or unit.

Locating freely available and appropriate resources for adult education classrooms has long been a challenge. CrowdEd Learning is doing an amazing job of archiving such resources and inviting practitioners to contribute to the collection. Members, if you don't know about the CrowdEd project, you'll definitely want to check it out.

Cheers, Susan

Thank you, Susan and Rachel, for these helpful resources!!!  I'm sharing with ESL teachers across Los Angeles Unified Adult Ed! :)
