EQUITY VS "ENGLISH ONLY"

Susan and group members, Over the years we have had many discussions about "English Only versus Bilingual Instruction", especially with respect to classes for beginning adult students who know little or no English. At this time perhaps it is appropriate to raise the issue in light of the ongoing 'debate' surrounding racial equity. Personally I believe that English Only is an offshoot of colonialism in the United States. Native American children, for example, were often sent to live and study far away from their homes, and were forbiden to speak their Native Tongue.

In any case, I hope that there will be some interest in a discussion and investigation, mainly because I know that it can lead to an improvement of the instruction involving "Beginners".
