Health Topics and Resources

Hello colleagues, There is no question that bringing health topics into our classroom is essential. What topics have you found to be most important in your teaching? What resources can you recommend to other teachers in our community. Thanks for sharing your experiences with teaching health topics and your best suggestions here!

Hello colleagues, Some members may be familiar with the every-growing fantastic online resources being developed by teams of adult educators at CrowdEd Learning.

The freely available (and editable) interactive online activities on CrowdEd "were developed as part of a Winter 2022 EdTech Maker Space project, where adult educators created and curated activities to augment the curriculum."

A couple of useful resources to address health literacy include "Staying Healthy: An English Learner’s Guide to Health Care and Healthy Living" (for intermediate-level and up) and "Staying Healthy for Beginners" (for high beginners) by Sabrina Kukrtz-Rossi and her colleagues. Both of these resources have been in the LINCS Resource Collection for some time. CrowdEd now features these texts on its site. Here's a link to the resources on Wakelet related to the text for beginners.

The interactive activities drawn from "Staying Healthy for Beginners" Chapter 1 include:

  • Photos to introduce topics (on Jamboard)
  • Vocabulary building activities (on Jamboard)
  • Vocabulary study (on Quizlet)
  • Dialogues to unscramble (on Jamboard)

The Wakelet page links to additional health-related vocabulary resources (e.g., on Learning Chocolate) to expand learners' opportunities to build vocabulary.  The page also links to additional health-related, leveled stories from the Reading Skills for Today's Adults collection as well as links to online health resources for students to learn more about the content in the text.

There's a LOT more on CrowdEd for teachers to check out. Let us know what you find valuable at the site!

Cheers, Susan Finn Miller

Hi Susan,

I was part of the CrowLearning Staying Health project and helped design activities for a few chapters. I am available to answer any necessary questions so teachers can start using it.
