Heat Safety Lesson Resources

Hello colleagues, I don't know how it is where you are, but it's been super hot here in eastern Pennsylvania.  This would be the ideal time to plan a lesson on heat safety.  Accordingly, I wanted to share some useful resources.

The Red Cross's Extreme Heat Safety webpage features a heat safety checklist available in several languages, and here's a lesson plan from Health Smart Virginia that could readily be adapted for an adult ESOL classrooms.  In this lesson, there is a focus on heat-related vocabulary, including terms such as:

  • heat weave
  • heat index
  • heat cramps
  • heat exhaustion
  • heat stroke
  • heat advisory

This lesson plan links to the  ready.gov/heat US government website which offers guidance on ways to stay safe in hot weather -- which are also available in a range of languages.

If you know of other resources, please share them here!

Stay cool, friends!

This is a very important topic! Here are some more valuable resources to help prepare all students for the summer months.

  • As summer approaches and heat waves become more frequent, I came across a blog post that emphasizes the importance of sharing heat and water safety tips with newcomers.
  • The National Resource Center for Refugees, Immigrants, and Migrants provides excellent summer safety materials. These can be shared with instructional staff to educate program participants about staying safe during the summer, or you can distribute multilingual flyers directly to your students.

Happy summer!
