Helping Our Digitally Literate Students

Teaching digital literacy skills is a hot topic. And adult educators now have some amazing resources to turn to in this area (Northstar Digital Literacy, GCF Learn, Google Applied Digital Skills, etc.), but we tend to focus on helping our students develop basic digital literacy skills. While this is extremely important, I was recently asked a new question that I think is equally as important, "What are we doing to help our more digitally literate students improve THEIR skills?" To be perfectly honest, I didn't have an answer, but ever since, I have been on the hunt, so I figure what better place to start looking than to our amazing LINCS community!

  • How ARE we helping our digitally literate students advance their skills?
  • What are the best FREE resources out there to help our more digitally literate students?

Great question Ashly,

There are two resources that come to mind:

Google Applied Digital Skills https://applieddigitalskills.withgoogle.com/en/teach?gclid=CjwKCAiAmuKbBhA2EiwAxQnt79EzmFBPsxoeBaftS8th-yXUIREZ2d4sllUpbG-OZmSecW_F0F8gwRoCbA4QAvD_BwE

ISTE standards for students https://www.iste.org/standards/iste-standards-for-students

While both of these were originally designed for students in school, some parts are suitable for adults.  The Google Applied Digital Skills offers a free curriculum. The ISTE standards, as far as I know, are just that -- standards, not a curriculum or lessons. Do you (does anyone here) know if there is a curriculum aligned to these standards that is suitable for adult learners?

In PA we just released the PA Foundation Skills with digital literacy skills and competency list. We have a lesson plan bank that is continuing to grow. I believe we have a few lessons on there that might have ISTE standards included. During 2023, I think we will have some lessons that will be aligned to CCRS, ELPS, and workforce preparation skills (which include digital literacy skills).
