I had a math instructor reach out to me about how important I thought "labels" were in the context of an assessment. She said that her students arrive at the correct response but mislabel the meaning of the numbers. She went on to tell me that the students read the problem, and pick out the quantities. They know "something" must be done, but they understand why.
So, what does the community think? Is it important? How should the teacher help students make the connections?
