invitation to ANN's annual institute

Hi math friends,

Over the last year, as I’ve been stuck in my apartment, the adult math instructor community has been vital in helping me feel connected and hopeful, despite the bleak circumstances that have faced our world. My colleagues in the Adult Numeracy Network are amazing math instructors from around the country and are working together to promote a humane vision of math education for adults based on understanding and compassion. We work together in committees and play together in math teachers’ circle meetings, and would welcome your participation.

I encourage you to attend the Adult Numeracy Network’s annual event at the COABE conference. This year, the conference is online which means we can participate from around the country. Your registration for ANN’s annual institute includes a yearly membership. The money we collect from the COABE institute (and yearly membership fees) supports the organization’s work throughout the year. About half of COABE’s $75 registration fee for the institute goes to ANN’s work. It pays for the Math Practitioner newsletter, our web site, and our Zoom account for meetings, workshops, and webinars. It also pays for a practitioner research grant that we provide each year.

27th Annual Adult Numeracy Network (ANN) Teaching & Learning Institute: Experiencing Harmony & Beauty in Mathematical Patterns

COABE National Pre-conference (online)
Friday, March 19, 2021
12:30 PM to 3:30 PM (CDT)

During this half-day professional development, participants will:

  • Explore ways that music and art reflect number sense, proportional reasoning, and symmetry.
  • Build bridges between the things your students see and listen to and the math your students do in the classroom.
  • Consider music and art in various contexts and its connections to topics across the curriculum.
  • Imagine classrooms where students are challenged to think deeply about mathematics, even if they are still working on fundamental skills.
  • Gain an appreciation of how music and art can enrich your classes and increase student interest and engagement.
  • Leave with classroom-ready activities that you can immediately use with students at all ability levels.

The $75 registration fee includes 3 hours of professional development and a one year ANN membership (new or renewal). If you are unable to attend the full three-day COABE conference, you can still attend the ANN Annual Pre-conference on Friday, March 19.  When registering, choose the single-day registration for the pre-conference.
