Adult learner-led book club

Colleagues,

In Redlands, California, at the A.K. Smiley Public Library, shortly before COVID-19 restrictions forced the library to close, two adult learners started a book club that they have led. After the first in-person meeting,  they moved it to a virtual learner-led book club. The club meets every two months. I gather that the leaders of the book club, Tanya Jauregui and Martha Romo, facilitate the meetings using skills they learned through participation in California’s Adult Learner Leadership Institute.

The book club reading list has included:

  • “Tuesdays With Morrie” by Mitch Albom
  • “My Brigadista Year” by Katherine Paterson
  • “Peace and Bread” The Story of Jane Adams by Stephanie Sammarino McPherson
  • “Escape from Vietnam” Van's Story by Mabel Ngo
  • “The Cell Phone Lot” by Greta Gorsuch

For more information, read this article about the book club from the Redlands Community News.

Does your program have a book club or a book group? If so, what books are students reading? Is it learner-led? Seems like a great idea to try, including now during the pandemic.
