Coffee Break Resources Shared

Hi Everyone,

Our community recently hosted a coffee break discussion, and I will highlight a few language arts resources that were shared.

I led off the discussion demonstrating how to use The Learning Network’s free resource What’s Going On in This Picture?  After introducing the picture, an out of context picture from a news story, I asked two questions:

  • What’s going on in the picture?
  • Why do you say that?

This gives students an easy visual prompt to write about without worrying about grammar or punctuation.  It also helps them back up what they say with evidence.

Many adult educators are already familiar with Reading Skills for Today’s Adults, a free resource that offers a variety of levelled reading passages with audio and supplemental materials.  Kristine Kelly mentioned a very similar resource with a health care context, Reading Skills for Healthcare Workers.  While designed to be part of a career pathway for nurse’s aides, this resource could also be used in career exploration and health literacy.  Speaking of health care, Philip Anderson mentioned a Wakelet (web content collection) he created with Coronavirus resources for our adult learners.

Finally, Marilyn Collins recommended the Bow Valley College ESL Literacy Readers.  She said this resource contained, “fabulous easy readers with visuals and audio for beginners.”

How have you used any of these resources?

What other resources have you found effective for teaching language arts remotely?

Thanks for your thoughts,
